It’s not uncommon for us to see our beloved partner in a less favorable light after we get married or move in together. When we are courting, we not only try to show our partner our best side but we also don’t really notice the “down side” of our partner. A direct result of the first step of self-recognition is receiving recognition from a caring health professional, counsellor, or therapist. How specifically is that recognition given? Survivors who were interviewed pointed out that most helpful for them were: being listened to, being respected, being validated, being understood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], being supported, being cared for, having someone who just ‘was there’ for them when they needed someone.
Being supported and cared for strengthens survivors’ sense of self. It enables them to regain a sense of control over themselves and their body. They become more confident in social situations, and are less inclined to accept any forms of disrespect. Abuse based thought patterns such as “I am not ok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I am stupid, I am unlikeable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I deserve to be treated badly” undergo a radical shift whilst responsibility for their struggle is put back to the perpetrator(s).
Receiving recognition from their therapist in the described forms of support and care has a remarkable impact on survivors. They feel less alone, are more hopeful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], start thinking more positively about themselves and become more confident in social situations. The more survivors can internalise the care and support from their therapist, the stronger they become, and the more they can cope with ‘challenges’.
The journey of recovery from sexual abuse can often be a journey of pain that over time may become hopeful longing and turns towards the end into delight. Even though most survivors understand recovery as a lifelong process, a significant milestone is usually achieved when coping without professional help becomes possible.
Whilst for some people ‘asking for help’ might constitute an admission of weakness, in the case of recovering from sexual abuse asking for help represents a monumental paradigm shift. Whereas acts of (sexual) abuse leads victims to believe “I am worthless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nobody cares about my needs”, asking for help is the first sign of changing that belief into “I am worth caring about,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my needs matter”. This may only be a subtle, unconscious shift,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it’s a shift none the less.
How does this transformation at the core of survivors’ self-understanding take place? It takes place through a process described here as ‘Recognition’. The first and maybe the most important step to recovery is self-recognition, whereby the survivor gives recognition to her/his need for care and support and affirms the will to live a life worth living.
As we see, recovery from sexual abuse is a process that starts of with survivors giving recognition to themselves. This act of ‘Self Love’ has been the seed from which recovery could grow. ‘Self Love’ will be significant all throughout the journey of recovery. Without ‘Self Love’ recovery will not be possible. Self-hate and self-criticism only lead to distress and an affirmation of the negative messages received through the abuse. Finding ways of expressing ‘Self Love’ is the back bone of recovery. The Beatles sang “All you need is love” – how true!

When the essence of your life, which is consciousness, connects to something, a commitment is formed. A superficial level of commitment happens when your consciousness connects to the thoughts of something and you are just left committed to your own mind. The most common example of a deeper commitment is when your consciousness connects to another’s heart and you are conscious of more than your own mind. That can be interpreted as dedication, but real commitment has to involve more than your thinking mind. Now, most people do not consider thoughts illusions, but think of a piece of your favorite pie. Then try to eat it. The thoughts of the pie are symbolic; they only represent the pie and actually do not exist. Think of anything and your thoughts are symbolic, even thoughts of family, country and God. Realizing thoughts are symbolic allows you to commit more than your thinking mind to be dedicated.

This is a practical example of the need to have commitments that go beyond the thoughts in your mind. That is where we all have powerful inner resources that we were born with and did not learn in school. Being committed to heal demands that you become conscious and activate this beyond-thought inner reality.
*ML When we get medications and treatments for an illness, the Wisdom of the Body is what responds the best. If you totally identify with your ego and thinking, medical treatments may be limited by your ability to respond on that level. All of our conditioned limitations are rooted in our thoughts and habits, but if you develop a commitment to the Wisdom of your Body,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will respond the best.
We may not have thought this way before, but the fact is most of us already connect to that deeper inner wisdom. Here are three important actions we can all develop that enhance this commitment:
• The expression of the heart and the ability to love and be loved. This includes the ability to love yourself.
• A focus on your breath that can take you beyond thinking and connect you to the Wisdom of your Body. You can consciously develop habits of breathing into the silence beyond thinking and constantly activate inner wisdom.
• Spiritual aspirations have the ability to take you beyond the limitations of your thinking mind. If you believe in God or not, these aspirations have the ability to connect you to the Wisdom of your Body.

It’s always a good idea to just free write your ideas onto to paper first, without worrying about style or grammar, just to see where the holes are in your argument. Another good strategy is to create an outline for each section or paragraph that includes all author citations. As an expert in your field, your advisor may be able to glance at the outline and determine right away if you are missing a major piece of research.
Your job as a graduate student is to keep your advisor apprised of what you are doing. If you are constantly just giving him or her the same three chapters this does not convince him that you are making progress. As always, you should provide your advisor with an outline and cover sheet with instructions on how to read the document you have submitted for review. Thus you should write another chapter while you are waiting to hear back from your advisor or committee members.
Reality: This isn’t undergraduate school, where you could get away with pulling an all-nighter to cram for a test the next day. Your thesis or dissertation is a months-long process, and you’ll need every bit of that time. If pressure truly is a motivator for you, there are many more productive ways to create it: for example, by challenging yourself to finish a paragraph within a half hour or pretending that the section you are writing is a timed essay or qualifying or preliminary exam. Setting monthly, weekly, daily deadlines for each chapter, outline, and paragraph is a healthy way to create pressure and continue moving your project forward.
Myth #3: "In order to work on my paper, I must have four uninterrupted hours."
Myth #7: “I’m too busy to write a thesis or dissertation.”
Reality: The biggest misconception about finishing a thesis or dissertation is the belief that writing is the key component to completion. The real key to finishing is effective time management. This is particularly true given the fact that, for most students, writing the document must be completed in tandem with numerous other important tasks, such as preparing for the job market; moving to or starting a new job; preparing for graduation; or working a full-time job. Perhaps you are looking forward to making significant progress on your thesis or dissertation before the end of the summer. Be specific. Myth #1: "I know it's time for me to start writing, but I just haven't done enough research yet. I'll spend one more night at the library or on the internet, and then I'll start writing my paper."
Myth #6: “I can’t write unless I have someone with whom I can talk through my ideas.”
Reality: You can -- and should -- work on your thesis or dissertation in 12- to 15-minute task modules. This will help you break down the laborious writing process into smaller pieces,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making it far more manageable. In our busy lives, finding four-hour chunks of time is very difficult to do; but you have small chunks of 12- to 15-minutes of time throughout the day. Furthermore, if you know you’re only going to have to dedicate a small amount of time when you sit down, the task won’t seem so daunting, and you’ll be less likely to procrastinate. Keep a detailed checklist of all of the items you have to complete, and refer to it often. On days when you’ve got a little bit more time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], choose a larger task. But on most days, when you only have a little bit of time, work down your list until you reach one (or more!) of your tasks that can be completed in 12 minutes or less. Reality: Your advisor always assumes that you are and adult and able to manage your time and your writing project. As a graduate student your task is to make daily progress; revising the same chapter over and over again does not move you forward in any substantive way. You should not wait until each chapter is fully polished before you move on. You should be giving your advisor a new chapter to read while you revise the one s/he gives back to you.
Reality: Being able to verbalize your ideas to a friend is a good start but, in reality, that’s not all you want; it’s the comfort of company. Get a writing buddy or buddies or get online.
The beginning should address the implications of your research question in the real world. Be sure to separate your contribution from what has already been done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The middle should be quite technical for the experts on your committee and you should end by brining it back to your general audience.
A good public speaker gives a presentation that is clear and concise. In sum, a speech or presentation can be broken into three parts; 1. Tell them what you are going to tell them (Beginning), 2. Tell them (Middle) and 3. Summarize what you just told them (End).
How many excuses have you come up to explain why you can’t begin to work on your thesis or dissertation today? Most of these excuses are simply “myths.” Following are “mythbusters” to common writing “cop outs.”
Myth #4: "I can’t write anything until I have the perfect thesis statement/introduction” AND/OR “I can’t write any more until what I’ve already done is perfect.”
Reality: In order to write, you don’t need your entire office,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], house or apartment to be clean … just your little writing space! If you really hate to clean, clean while listening to your favorite music and or program your pick ups around your favorite television show. Indulge in watching the stars, and then force yourself to pick up items during the commercials. Start in one area of the space and clean clockwise. By the end of the program, you’ll be surprised how much you’ve accomplished! Voila! You’re ready to write.

Most people I ask this question are unable to produce the list because they never made one in the first place! Some did make a list but it got lost somewhere in a sea of paper.
Goal-setting is inspirational through highlighting the benefits in striving for an outcome.
When you get excited about the rewards at the end of your work, "you get the fire in your belly", you get into action and action is the key to goal-achievement.
You also need a reliable means of documenting your goalmaking and goal management. There are many tools which can help - diaries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], performance planners,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], electronic mechanisms and software (of course I recommend the GoalMaker software which I co-authored!). Invest in a good tool and use it consistently and it will give you the edge over your competitors who rely on their fallible memory!
The best way to harness this is to declare your goal to someone you trust, ask them to be your coach and expect that you will achieve the goal as well as expected and by the due date. Your coach can be a professional, someone you love, a work colleague,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a respected mentor, or just a good buddy. The primary task of the coach is to remind you that you are committed to achieving your goal. It's fun and sometimes more helpful, if they also encourage you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], share your rewards and help celebrate when you achieve your goal

You are responsible for your thoughts, so make them positive ones. Don't listen to people who say, "It will never work. You can't do that. You'll never make it". The most important generalized skills and strategies for goal-achievement are:
- Planning
- Managing Time
- Keeping Agreements.

There are two essential elements of the goals process:

The goal making process follows logical, sequential behavioural steps. However, a substantial amount of the impact depends on your mental attitude. These guidelines reinforce a positive attitude so that you become unconsciously competent in setting your goals
